Rwanda suffered a civil war and genocide in 1994 which killed a million people. Today, many in the country still live in desperate poverty. Gavin and his wife Bronwen are currently working there with their charity Mission Rwanda
His accounting skills are being put to use teaching accountancy to church accountants. Churches in Rwanda are able to help a great many people out of poverty but one of the reasons they find this difficult is a perception among western donors that money given to Africa might not properly be accounted for. Perceptions of financial impropriety in Africa may have some basis in fact but are more the result of lack of training than inherent dishonesty. Gavin is attempting to redress this by bringing the churches in Rwanda up to European accounting standards. |
